Maltese cross is a recurring symbol in Chanel products. For the first time they appeared in a jewelry collection created by Duke Fulco di Verdura in the 1930s. For him, this symbol had a special meaning, rooted in di Verdura’s childhood: he grew up in Sicily, not far from Malta. First Verdura created a pair of slightly nonidentical Maltese cross-shaped brooches. Later he created the famous pair of bracelets which so often adorned Gabrielle’s wrists. These earclips combined the influence of two iconic figures in the life of Gabrielle Chanel: Duke di Verdura and Madame Gripoix. They bring back the imagery of Byzantine reproductions.
